2018 BC Boccia Provincial Championships

Vancouver, BC (July 27, 2018) – This past weekend, SportAbility welcomed athletes across BC when we hosted the 2018 Boccia Provincial Championships. The event featured 12 athletes from the Lower Mainland, Prince George, and Vancouver Island. The tournament began with two round-robin pools, and players from all classifications competed against each other for a top ranking in their pool and to move on to the quarter finals.

At the end of this round, the athletes placed as follows:
Pool A

  1. Caroline Vietnieks
  2. Paul Jalbert
  3. Hanif Mawji
  4. Chris Halpen
  5. Tracy Boyd
  6. Mildred Thomas

Pool B

  1. Marney Smithies
  2. Alison Kabush
  3. Zosia Ettenberg
  4. Gabe Wadham
  5. Bhavyn Sandhu
  6. Abneet Dhaliwal

The quarterfinal matches in Day 2 had some close competition, and ended with Caroline, Zosia, Marney, and Alison all vying for trophies. Alison secured her spot in the quarterfinals after a tough match against Hanif that went to extra ends. In the end, it was Caroline that took home the gold after her final against Alison, and Marney securing the bronze after a victory over Zosia.

The pairs competition began in the afternoon with four teams:

  1. Bhavyn Sandhu and Ross MacDonald (stepping in for Paul Jalbert)
  2. Mildred Thomas and Gabe Wadham
  3. Abneet Dhaliwal and Hanif Mawji
  4. Tracy Boyd and Chris Halpen

After the first round of pairs matches, Bhavyn/Ross continued to the final against Tracy/Chris, while Mildred/Gabe and Abneet/Hanif competed for the bronze. There were some close matches across all the games, but in the end, Tracy and Chris came out with the gold.
