Despite 2-1 record, Canada’s BC3 Pair Do Not Move onto Playoffs at Poznan World Boccia Challenger
Ottawa, ON (June 30, 2024) – BC3 boccia athletes, Alexandre Lemaire (Kingsey Falls, QC) and Marylou Martineau (Québec City, QC) teamed up in BC3 Pairs this weekend, but were eliminated in pool play at the 2024 Poznan World Boccia Challenger in Poland. This ends the last leg of international competition for these three athletes, including Olivier Roy (Québec City, QC) until after the Paralympic Games.
The Pair started this event strong with a tiebreak win against Austria. They followed up the win with another impressive performance, this time, against Kazakhstan, winning 10-0. Their demise was an 8-0 loss to the host, Poland, their only defeat of the tournament.
“Marylou made a great move in the first end against Poland, but after being down by three points going into the second, we couldn’t win the points back,” explained teammate Lemaire. “We lacked confidence and had moments of hesitation.”
The top two teams in each pool advanced to the playoffs. With Poland and Austria also finishing with 2-1 records in Pool A, it came down to points differential, which relegated Canada to third.
This ends the tournament for the Pair, but they set their sights on the next competition, likely in Cali, Columbia this October. With only two international events competing together as a Pair, they will be looking to improve and move past pool play and into the playoffs for the first time ever.
