Quebec dominated the competition on first day of 2016 Canadian Boccia Championships

Surrey, BC (March 12, 2016) – The first day of competition at the 2016 Canadian Boccia Championships in Surrey, BC was marked by strong performances from both rookie and experienced boccia players from across the country in team and pair play. Provincial teams included participants from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the home province, British Colombia.

Quebec had an exceptionally strong showing taking gold in both BC3 and BC4 play. The group that struck gold at the 2015 Defi Sportif, former BC4 World Number One Marco Dispaltro, member of CIBC Team Next Alison Levine, and Iulian Ciobanu, took the win in BC4 play.

In BC3 play, Éric Bussière asserts “We’ve been training hard for this competition for months now, and we were confident gold was within reach – we did it! Time to focus on individual play”.

In team play, Ontario took the gold medal while silver fell to British Colombia and Quebec finished the day with bronze. BC2 Ontario player Tammy Mcleod says, “I am proud of how we played today. We were so strong by working as a Team. We kept our cool and had fun throughout our games which I think was the key to our success”.

Off the bronze medal, British Colombia coach Shannon Sydorak says “in our last team game we knew we had to win against Newfoundland to get a medal and it was a tough start. We kept trading points back and forth until the 5th end. In thefifthend we had 4 balls left and only had a little opening to score as many points as we could. Hanif Mawji took his two balls and made the two best shots of the game pushing balls forward and then placing to score 4 points”.
