London to Host the 2022 Canadian Boccia Championships

Ottawa, ON (April 1, 2022) – The 2022 Canadian Boccia Championships are coming back to London, Ontario this November 15-21.
The competition will feature the nation’s best boccia athletes in the BC1, BC2, BC3, BC4, BC5, and Open classes competing at the North London Optimist Centre.This year’s event will be hosted by the London Cannonballs Boccia Club. The club is no stranger to hosting national events. They also host the annual Boccia Blast, a sanctioned National Open competition that has been a staple on the Canadian boccia schedule since 1990. London last hosted the Canadian Boccia Championships in 2011. The London Cannonballs were originally slated to host the Championships in 2020 until the event was cancelled due to COVID. “It’s a pleasure to work with the London Cannonballs to bring the Canadian Boccia Championships back to London,” says Jennifer Larson, Program Manager for Boccia Canada, who hopes this event will increase awareness of the sport in the London area. “Boccia is a great sport for people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities and London is blessed to have a strong local club and support from local agencies to help new participants get involved.” Co-Chair, Host Organizing Committee, Tammy McLeod, is excited for what’s in store: “We are so excited to be able to host the 2022 Canadian Championships! It has been a long wait as we had to cancel in 2020 due to COVID. We are planning to welcome athletes and officials from across Canada to London. It’s extra special for us because it’s the first time in seven years since Ontario has hosted and the first time in eleven years that the London Cannonballs, have hosted. We are looking forward to the fierce competition!” London athlete Sandra Regalo is hoping to qualify for the Championships on home soil: “It would mean a lot for me to qualify once again for the Canadian Championships! I have been working hard to get there and being in my hometown would make me even more proud of how far I have come. It is a very large goal of mine…I am a proud Londoner and I’m excited for this future opportunity!” The host organizing committee is hopeful that spectators will be permitted at this year’s event, but will continue to monitor the COVID situation closely in the months leading up to the Championships.
