Athletes from across Canada showcased skill and strategy over four exciting days of competition at the 2025 Boccia Blast.
Hosted at Mississauga’s Burnhamthorpe Community Centre, the Boccia Blast gave both experienced and emerging athletes the chance to compete for titles and valuable national ranking points.
Over 30 athletes competed across four divisions (BC1, BC2, BC3 and BC4/Open) in individual play, with three new champions capturing titles.
The BC1 and BC2 divisions both used a double round robin format where each athlete played everyone in their division twice. Chris Halpen (Victoria, BC) took home the BC1 title, while Julian Caverley (Niagara Falls, ON) showed he’s one to watch and claimed the BC2 crown.
Ontario was well represented in the combined BC4/Open Division, where Andrea Richards (Quinte, ON) won gold in a tightly contested 4-3 win over Gordon Letke (Oshawa, ON)
One athlete did retain his title, as reigning national champion Joshua Gauthier (Niagara Falls, ON) won gold in the BC3 division. Gauthier has won the last three consecutive national events and now holds thGaue Canadian Championship, Defi Sportif and Boccia Blast titles.
“I had a blast at Boccia Blast and I am extremely happy with the way I played,” said Gautier. “It’s great to have my training pay off and to succeed at one of my favorite events in the country.”
National team Head Coach César Nicolai was in attendance and was pleased with the level of play and skill shown by the athletes.
“This national tournament was a really good opportunity for me to observe progress made by our Canadian athletes,” said Nicolai. “The boccia in Canada is improving and there were some really great performances this weekend.”
This year also saw the return of team and pairs competition to Boccia Blast, bringing even more excitement to the event with BC3 pairs and Mixed Class Team events.
“I’m really happy to see team and pairs competition back at Boccia Blast,” said Nicolai. It’s great to see the athletes show the ways they can work together on court.”
